
SHU Women's Basketball Outlasts Albany, 69-63, in Home Opener

FAIRFIELD, CT (December 1, 2002) - Sacred Heart placed four players in double figures as the Pioneers posted a 69-63 win over the University at Albany in their home opener Sunday afternoon. Senior Ashley Durmer (Nashua, NH) led all Pioneer scorers with 15 points on four-of-seven shooting and three-of-six from behind the three-point arc.
Fellow senior Brooke Rutnik (Albany, NY) saw just five minutes of action in the first half because of foul trouble, but came back strong in the final half to pace the Pioneers. Rutnik scored all 12 of her points in the second half, six-of-10 from the field, while grabbing six boards, handing out two assists and making two steals. Senior Brooke Kelly (Medford, NJ) finished with 12 points and five rebounds on the afternoon.
The Pioneers held just a 32-30 halftime advantage, shooting 42.6% in the first half but committed 14 turnovers. Sacred Heart got 21 points off the bench, led by freshman sensation Nicolle Rubino (Port Jefferson Station, NY). Rubino hit for 11 points on the afternoon, knocking down five-of-six from the free throw line, in 28 minutes of action.
Great Dane center Danielle Hutcheson led all scorers on the day with 20 points and eight rebounds. Forward Maree Jones finished with seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Jess McGinlay and Kathryn Hemlock finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively, as Albany falls to 1-2 on the season.
Sacred Heart, now 2-1 on the year, will return to action on Saturday, December 7th, as they travel to Princeton, NJ to take on the Princeton Tigers at 7 pm.
