Stony Brook Clips Sacred Heart Football, 47-16

FAIRFIELD, CT - Junior running back Clinton Graham ran for 129 yards and a scored a pair of touchdowns, and Stony Brook University took advantage of seven Sacred Heart University turnovers as the Seawolves defeated the Pioneers 47-16 in a Northeast Conference battle on Saturday.

Stony Brook, now 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the NEC, scored first on a Michael Soto 30-yard field goal early in the first quarter. Stony Brook then took a 9-0 lead on a four-yard run by Graham, after a fumble by Pete Athans for Sacred Heart on a punt return gave the Seawolves the ball at the SHU 13. Graham put the Seawolves up 16-0 with 5:09 left in the first on a 39-yard shovel pass from QB T.J. Moriarty.

Sacred Heart, 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference, got on the board with :54 left in the first quarter on a 17-yard touchdown run by senior Jason Bonadies. Backup QB Paul Kelley answered for the Seawolves, making it 23-6, running for a 15-yard touchdown with 10:57 to go in the half. The score was set up after SHU QB Ammel fumbled a snap and it was recovered by Stony Brook at the SHU 46.

Senior kicker Greg Tonzola kicked a 21-yard field goal with 5:07 to play in the second quarter to cut the gap to 23-9. Stony Brook put a dagger in the Pioneer hearts when Ammel was intercepted by junior corner Ernie Williams in the final minute of the half and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown.

The Seawolves made it 37-9 by scoring on the final play of the third quarter on a 33-yard pass from Moriarty to junior wideout Londre Blocker. That score was also courtesy of a Pioneer turnover when Ammel fumbled the ball, giving Stony Brook the ball at midfield.

Soto booted a 20-yard field goal with 8:04 left in the fourth to make it 40-9, and made it 47-9 after a Mike Peshler fumble gave Stony Brook the ball at the 39-yard line. Five plays later senior running back Ken Lockhart ran it in from 22-yards out.

The Pioneers closed out the scoring with :23 left in the game on a one-yard plunge by Ammel, that capped a nine-play, 71-yard drive.

The seven Sacred Heart turnovers helped Stony Brook overcome a plethora of penalties. The Seawolves were penalized 20 times for 159 yards.
