ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Gary Jones ran for 162 yards and a touchdown to lead
Albany to a 42-7 win Saturday.
Jones averaged 6.8 yards a carry in the effort including a 21-yard breakaway
for a touchdown. Four other Great Danes rushed for touchdowns as Albany gained
404 yards on the ground to Sacred Heart's 68.
Albany (2-2, Northeast Conference 2-0) took advantage of David Wahlen's
short punt following a bad snap on its first offensive series. Starting
quarterback Anthony Sciarra, faked into the line on an option play, and raced
around right end on a 49-yard touchdown run.
The Great Danes used a nine-play drive to make the score 14-0 with 1:15 left
in the first quarter.
Jones took an option pitch on fourth-and-two and sprinted 21 yards up the
right sideline for his TD.
Sacred Heart (3-1, NEC 2-1) scored in the second quarter after cornerback
Pete Athans picked off a Sciarra pass. Quarterback Joe Kroells ran 13 yards on
a scramble to make the score 14-7.
With under three minutes left in the first half, Kroells bobbled the center
exchange and Albany's Victor Camacho recovered the fumble at the Sacred Heart
17-yard line. Five plays later, Eddie Unverzagt scored from two yards out on a
toss sweep for a 21-7 lead.
Albany scored on its first two possessions of the second half on two
eight-play, 73-yard drives. Quarterback Uli Delgado, who rotated with Sciarra,
hit Mike Lavelle on an inside-screen pass for a 37-yard touchdown. In the
second drive, Rohann Vidal (55 yards, six carries) scored on a 7-yard run up
the middle for a 35-7 lead.
Jon George (60 yards, five carries) broke away in the fourth quarter for a
39-yard TD run.
Albany's defense held Sacred Heart to 165 total yards.
Sacred Heart's Robert Ammel completed six of 15 passes for 63 yards and
Jason Bonadies ran for 50 yards on 21 caries.
