Freshman Amy Hendricks (Milford, PA) scored two goals, and junior Ashley Del Greco (Merrrimack, NH) made 22 saves in goal as the Pioneer field hockey team finished the regular season with a 4-2 in over Monmouth Sunday in New Jersey.
The Hawks took an early 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by junior Bridget Greene. The Hawks put a lot of pressure on Del Greco as they unleashed 14 shots on goal in the first half.
Sacred Heart answered Greene's goal with a goal off a penalty corner less than five minutes later. Hendricks re-directed a shot from Colleen Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY) to tie the contest, 1-1. The Hawks had an opportunity to take a lead into the intermission as junior Maeve Hagen had a penalty stroke at the end of the half, but Del Greco turned it away.
The Pioneers unleashed three unanswered goals after the intermission to put the contest out of reach. Junior Jenna McLane (Stowe, VT) took a pass from Hendricks off a penalty corner to put the Pioneers up a goal. Less than three minutes later, sophomore Leah Stoehr (Hummelstown, PA) slid one past Carrie Colbert for her first goal of the season. Hendricks struck again with the Pioneers last goal as she took a pass from sophomore Danielle Vasely (Hopewell Junction, NY) and scored her second goal of the contest.
Senior Allie Flaig took a pass from Hagen and put it past Del Greco to finish off the scoring for the contest.
Colbert, the senior, had five saves in net for the Hawks as she faced 13 shots in her final home game.
The Pioneers finish the regular season at 9-9 overall and 6-2 in the Northeast Conference. They have clinched a spot in the NEC tournament next weekend and wiill be the number two seed in the four team field. The Pioneers will play Quinnipiac in the semifinals on Friday. The top seed and host team, Rider will face Fairfield in the other semifinal. The winners meet Sunday at Rider in the championship game. Game times will be announced by the NEC later this week.
