Pioneers Shutout Quinnipiac

Hamden, CT - Five different Pioneers found the back of the net as the Sacred Heart University field hockey team broke open a scoreless game with five second half goals in a 5-0 victory over Quinnipiac University on Friday afternoon in Hamden, CT. With the win the Pioneers improved to 3-2 in NEC action.

Junior Becky Ford (Salem, NH/Salem) opened the scoring for the Pioneers just over four minutes into the second half with her team leading seventh goal of the year. Ford converted a penalty corner pass from Colleen Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland). Freshman Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown) made it 2-0 just about six minutes later off a centering feed from classmate Melissa Mazin (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley).

The Pioneers put the game away with three goals in a span of 3:09 later in the half. Freshman Amy Hendricks (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley)converted a penalty corner pass from Katie Bohren (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) with about 10 minutes left. Carney then scored her sixth goal of the season and Mazin got her first to wrap up the win.

Bobcats goalie Erin McKay finished with five saves on the afternoon. Junior Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) made six saves in goal for the Pioneers for her fourth shut out of the season.

The Pioneers continue their road trip Sunday when they visit Fairfield in NEC action. Game time is 1:00 pm.
