Final Stats

Fairfield, CT - Sophomore Katie Bohren (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) scored with 16 minutes left in regulation and the Pioneer field hockey team beat Fairfield 2-1 in a crucial NEC game Sunday at Universtiy Field.

The winning goal was set up when senior Nicole Falco (Ocean, NJ/Ocean Township) pushed a pass into the circle toward Bohren. Bohren stopped the ball and released a shot which found the back of the cage to put the Pioneers up 2-1.

The Stags opened up the game with a goal 17 minutes remaining in the first half. Fairfield was awarded a penalty corner after the Pioneers incurred an infraction inside the circle. Nicole Mazzocchi set up the ball for Kelly Rath, who stroked the ball from 10 yards away and beat Sacred Heart goaltender Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack).

Sacred Heart tied the game less than one minute later when freshman Melissa Mazin (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) tallied an unassisted goal. The two teams went scoreless for the next 35 minutes until the Pioneers converted the game-winning play.

The Stags had a chance to tie the game with no time left on the clock after they were awarded a penalty corner. However, the Pioneers defense kept Fairfield from getting a shot on goal to secure the win.

Fairfield goaltender Lauren Callahan made two saves, while Del Greco was credited with six saves.
