Pioneers Settle for Draw Against Camels

Dec. 6, 2005

Final Stats

New London, CT - Freshman goaltender Lauren Mellen (Joliet, Ill.) stopped 45 of 46 shots, and each team scored a second period goal, as Connecticut College and Sacred Heart played to a 1-1 tie Tuesday night.

Junior Erin Barry (Pompton Plains, N.J) put the Pioneers on top 1-0 with 13:28 left in the second. But the lead did not last. Just 11 seconds later, sophomore forward Jill Mauer (Millbrook, N.Y.) put in the equalizer for the hosts and the game was tied at one.

The Pioneers continued to test the Camel rookie goalie in the third period, but Mellen stopped all 15 shots in the final frame and made five more saves to preserve the tie in the overtime. Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, Alaska) finished with 26 saves for Sacred Heart.

The tie also marked the first time the Camels had taken a point against their division 1 opposition. Sacred Heart had won the 10 previous meetings entering Tuesday night's game.

The Pioneers (4-8-3) will take the next five weeks off for final exams and the holidays. They return to the ice on Tuesday January 10th when they visit St. Michael's College.
