Oct. 1, 2006

Final Stats

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (October 1, 2006) - Freshman Whitney Russo (Waterville, ME) and sophomore Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY) each scored two goals leading the Sacred Heart field hockey team to their seventh-straight win Sunday afternoon, a 7-0 win over Saint Francis. The Pioneers remain perfect in the Northeast Conference at 3-0 and improve to 10-2 overall with the win.

The Red Flash, still winless on the year at 0-10 and 0-2 in the NEC, forced the action offensively in the early minutes, drawing three penalty corners. SFPA missed their opportunity however, mustering a pair of shots that missed the mark and the momentum swung to the Pioneers for the rest of the half.

Freshman Kelsey Zeyher (Poughkeepsie, NY) ended a scoring drought by both squads with 11:22 left in the first half when she deposited a shot that beat Red Flash goaltender Erin Reifsteck to her right side. Junior Jenn Howley (North Salem, NY) set up the play nicely for her fifth assist on the campaign.

Russo gave the Pioneers some insurance before the half mark when she scored her first career goal with 5:42 remaining. Junior Danielle Vasely's (Hopewell Junction, NY) attempted shot was saved, and Russo was there to bank it in off the rebound.

Carney played aggressive, and it paid off with four seconds remaining in the half. The midfielder's initial shot was saved but she was able to grab her own rebound and fire it back toward goal where the always crafty Eye was waiting to redirect the ball past the Red Flash keeper for a 3-0 lead at the half.

Seven minutes into the second half, the Flash again witnessed first-hand how dominant Eye could be. Junior Katie Bohren (Hopewell Junction, NY) set up Eye by firing toward net where she could get a stick on the ball and redirect it for her 22nd goal of the season, a mark that currently leads the nation.

From there, Sara Yeaton (Hampton, NH) and Russo would each score within 33 seconds, and Carney followed suit when she scored on a penalty stroke. This sudden offensive attack eroded put any hopes for a Red Flash comeback in doubt and transformed the contest into a big Pioneer victory.

Senior Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, NH) and sophomore Whitney Mills (Harrisburg, PA) each played a half, making two saves apiece in combining for the shutout win. Reifsteck made 10 saves in the loss.

Sacred Heart will look to extend their winning streak next weekend when they travel to Lock Haven on October 6th.
