Oct. 29, 2006

Final Stats

Schenectady, NY - Senior Colleen Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY) and sophomore Melissa Mazin (Putnam Valley, NY) each had a goal and assist and goaltender Whitney Mills (Harrisburg, PA) recorded her first career shutout as Sacred Heart defeated Siena, 4-0, in field hockey action Sunday.

With the win, the Pioneers close out the regular season 14-4 overall and 6-2 NEC play. SHU will be the number two seed in next weekend's NEC tournament, which will be hosted by Lock Haven. Quinnipiac will be seeded third and Rider claimed the fourth and final playoff spot.

Carney got the Pioneers started at the 17:00 minute mark with a rebound goal, her 12th marker of the season. Carney then set Mazin up for a goal on a penalty crorner early in the second half to make it 2-0. It was Carney's 12th helper of the year as she finished the regular season with 36 points.

Sophomore Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY), scored her nation-leading 30th goal in the 60th minute to make it 3-0. On another penalty corner attempt, Mazin fired a shot that Eye tipped in to extend her goal total.

Senior Becky Ford (Salem, NH), playing her final regular season game, finished the scoring with five seconds left in the game. Freshman Kelsey Zeyher (Poughkeepsie, NY) gave Ford a pass which she shot into the net for her third goal of the year.

Mills made nine saves in the cage for the Pioneers to earn the victory. SHU out shot the Saints 14-13 for the game.

The 2006 Northeast Conference tournament begins Friday in Lock Haven, PA. The semifinals on Friday will match Sacred Heart against Quinnipiac and Lock Haven versus Rider. The winners will meet on Saturday in the championship game.
