Pioneers Drop 4-1 Field Hockey Battle With Lock Haven

Oct. 6, 2006

Final Stats

Lock Haven, PA - In a battle of the Northeast Conference (NEC) field hockey unbeatens, Lock Haven University (9-3, 3-0 NEC) beat out Sacred Heart University (10-3, 3-1 NEC) 4-1 Friday night at Charlotte Smith Field.

After a slow start, the Lady Eagles pounded in three goals in the course of four minutes to end SHU's chances at a win.

Junior midfielder Blair Wynne had a pair of goals, but it was senior forward Mandy Daschbach who knocked in Sarah Huber's bouncing shot attempt for the first goal of the game.

Wynne hit off a backhand shot on the left side just 1:05 later at the 13:44 mark in the first half. Senior back Jill Wessner recorded an assist on the play, her sixth.

Wynne got her team-best seventh assist of the season on a brilliant cross from deep on the right side, originally intended for Daschbach. The senior whiffed, and Huber was right behind her for the 3-0 lead on a one-timer from the left side of the circle.

Wynne capped the scoring with her team-best 16th goal of the season nine minutes later. The Pioneers' Danielle Vasely (Hopwell Junction, NY) brok up the shutout with a goal assisted by Amy Hendricks (Milford, PA) in the second half, but it wasn't enough.

Strangely absent from the scoring column was SHU's star forward Carissa Eye. Eye had a seven-game streak of multi-goal games ended tonight, thanks to a defense that allowed her just one shot.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ali Harris made two saves in three tries to improve to 3-0, while counterpart Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, NH) made six saves in the loss.
