Senior outfielder Dave Kaloyanides (Reading, MA) clubbed a pair of homers in the opener, while senior hurler Chris Aldrich (Medway, MA) tossed a shutout in the second game to lead the Sacred Heart University baseball team to 4-2 and 3-0 wins over Long Island University in the Northeast Conference openers for both teams on Saturday. The victories push the Pioneer winning streak to five games.
Kaloyanides led off the game with his first homer of the season, a blast to left field. He gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the third with another solo shot to left. Senior DH Josh Enos made it 3-0 with a triple in the inning that scored Bobby McKee, who had walked with two outs. Jason Maiella made it 4-0 Pioneers in the fifth with an RBI single that scored McKee, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
Sacred Heart starter Jay Monti (Marlboro, NY) took a shutout into the seventh. He struck out the first two batters of the inning before yielding a base hit to Sean Durkin. Matthew Martino followed that with a two-run homer to right to spoil the shutout.
Monti struck out seven in the game while walking two to improve his record to 2-1.
In the nightcap, Tony Diaz gave the Pioneers the only run they would need with an RBI double in the second inning that scored Maiella who had singled. Kaloyanides led off the fifth with a single and later scored on a single by Enos to make it 2-0. Kaloyanides scored the third SHU run, after lacing a single for his fifth hit of the twinbill, he scored on a bases loaded walk to Jeff Hanson.
Aldrich scattered six LIU hits in notching his first win of the season. He struck out five in the game without issuing a walk.
