FAIRFIELD, CT (September 2, 2006) - The Sacred Heart Pioneer volleyball team suffered a pair of three game losses Saturday afternoon, wrapping up play at the Hartford Hawk Invitational. The Pioneers lost the day's first match, 3-0, to the host Hawks and fell in three-straight to Providence College in the night cap. SHU finishes up their first weekend of play at 1-3.
Against the Hawks, the Pioneers lost a hard fought battle in game one, 33-31, but Hartford was able to settle in for 30-26 and 30-22 wins in games two and three. In the loss to Providence, SHU fell 30-28, 30-23 and 30-26.
The Pioneers were led by freshman Annie Archer (Littleton, CO) who posted 13 kills and a .345 (13-3-29) against Hartford. She also finished with four digs and a pair of block assists. Sophomores Lynne Principio (Ardsley, NY) and Katie Thomas (Wappingers Falls, NY) had double digit digs with 11 and 13 respectively. Freshman Morgan Gross (Dumfries, VA) passed out 31 assists.
For the Hawks, Jennifer Monroy and Teri Connolly fueled the offense with 15 kills apiece. Monroy added 11 digs for the double double.
In the Providence match, senior Justina Bell (Holcomb, KS) came away with 11 kills and six digs to pass the Pioneers. Archer had a solid game with six kills, three service aces and three block assists.
The Friars got double digit kills from Jess Storer with 11 and Sara Fleming and Jeanette Toney with 10 apiece.
Sacred Heart returns to the court on Friday and Saturday, September 8th and 9th at the Lafayette Tournament. SHU will face the host Leopards, Saint Peter's and Fairleigh Dickinson.
