Junior James Ulrich scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed ten rebounds to help Wagner College defeat Sacred Heart University in a Northeast Conference men's basketball game Monday night. The loss dropped the Pioneers to 11-11 overall and 7-4 in the NEC.
The Pioneers opened up an early 8-3 lead, but a 17-1 run by the Seahawks put them up 20-9 with 11:07 left in the half. SHU used a 9-0 spurt of its own to cut the gap to 20-18. Chauncey Hardy buried a three at the buzzer to cut the Wagner halftime lead to 41-35.
The Pioneers hit the first two buckets of the second half to cut the Wagner lead to two, but less than two minutes later, a three by Joey Mundweiler put Wagner ahead 46-39 with 17:30 to play. A Joey Henley layup off a pass from Drew Shubik on the penetration cut the Seahawk lead to 46-45 with 15:30 left.
An Ulrich put-back with just under five minutes to play gave Wagner a 66-55 lead. Frye cut it to 66-59 with a jumper with 3:45 left, but Mark Porter answered for the Seahawks. Henley hit a couple of free throws with 3:06 to go to make it 68-61. A three by Hardy with 2:27 remaining got SHU within six at 72-66.
Frye stole the ball on the next Wagner possession and was fouled driving to the basket with 2:02 left. He made one of two free throws to get within five. Another Wagner turnover and drive by Frye sent the senior back to the line. Again he made just one of two and the Pioneers trailed 72-68.
Mark Porter missed the front end of a one-and-one on the next Wagner trip, but the Pioneers couldn't take advantage as Frye missed a runner in the lane. Brice Brooks nailed a three with :38 left, but his team still trailed 75-71. Porter hit one free throw when he was fouled after the inbound pass and made one. Henley hit a long jumper to cut the Wagner lead to 76-73. Porter again could convert just one of two when fouled, and Hardy nailed a three to make it 77-76 with :16 remaining.
Smith was fouled after the shot and made both to put the Seahawks back up three. A long three attempt by Hardy fell short and Vitale grabbed the rebound for Wagner. He was fouled immediately and made one of two to put the game away.
Hardy led the Pioneers with 16 points, while Brooks had 15 and seven rebounds. Shubik finished with 12 points. He also had eight assists and five steals.
Porter finished with 16 points for Wagner, which moved to 9-13 overall and 6-5 in the NEC.
