Junior Jeff Hanson had a pair of hits and three RBI in the opening game as the Sacred Heart baseball team defeated Yale 9-8. Yale came back to win the second 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the seventh, after a two-out error by the Pioneers.
SHU, 10-16, took a 3-1 lead in the first on a two-run single by Hanson and an RBI single by senior Jamie Morales.
Yale, 10-19, scored four times in the second to take a 5-3 lead thanks to a pair of SHU errors and a two-run double by Marc Sawyer.
The Pioneers scored for of their own in the top of the third on RBI singles by freshman Steve Tedesco and Hanson, and an RBI double by senior Jay Maiella. A two-run homer by senior Rob Tencza in the
sixth extended the Pioneer lead to 9-6.
Junior Chris Barthel gave up single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh, but still earned his second collegiate save for Sacred Heart. Chris Howard got the win with a scoreless inning of relief out of the bullpen.
In the nightcap, Mike Cahill tied the game at 1-1 in the second for SHU with his first homer of the season. Yale retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Pioneers took a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Adam Farino led off by reaching on an outfield error by the Bulldogs. He scored on an RBI groundout by Paul Schmidt. Ryan Nemcek and Pete Kandybowicz followed with back-to-back singles. Frank Bainer chased home one run with a double, while freshman JJ Edwards plated the other with an RBI single.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the fifth off reliever Alex Rosachi. They won the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. With a runner on third, a groundball to short that would have ended the inning went through the legs of Ryan Nemcek to allow the winning run to score.
The Pioneers will be off until they face Fairleigh Dickinson in a four-game NEC series starting Friday at 3:00 p.m. All the games will be available on audio on the Pioneer Radio Network on the Internet.
