Senior pitcher Jay Monti (Marlboro, NY) allowed just one unearned run over seven innings and senior Jason Maiella (N. Haledon, NJ) had a pair of RBI to lead the Sacred Heart University baseball team to a 3-1 win over visiting Long Island University in the first game of a Northeast
Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers, 15-17 and 6-3, picked up a run in the bottom of the first inning when senior Bobby McKee (Massapequa, NY) doubled with two outs, and junior Jeff Hanson (Woodstock, NY) followed with a double to make it 1-0.
SHU took a 2-0 lead in the third when Justin Mulrain (Brantford, ONT) led off with a single, stole second and later scored on a bases-loaded walk to Maiella.
LIU, 7-22 and 2-7, got its only run in the fourth on an RBI single by Gerard Tingos with two outs. The run came after Robbie Rowen led off by reaching on an error.
Sacred Heart knocked LIU starter Mike Maynard out of the game in the fourth with two outs, when sophomore Phil Tantillo (Blue Point, NY) lined a ball off of his ankle. Steve Cedel came on in relief for the Blackbirds and allowed just one run in 2 1/3 innings.
The Pioneers got an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single by Maiella that scored freshman Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA), who had led off the frame with a walk.
Monti improved to 6-2 with the win, while Maynard took the loss to fall to 2-3.
