Baseball Falls at Monmouth, 10-1

W. LONG BRANCH, NJ - Junior hurler Brad Brach tossed his fourth complete game on the season, working 9.0 innings, allowing five hits, while striking out 10 batters, to lead the Monmouth Hawks to a 10-1 win over the visiting Sacred Heart Pioneers Thursday afternoon.

The Monmouth offense pounded out ten hits, including a grand slam by senior Justin Braun off SHU starter Chris Howard. The win improves the Hawks' record to 28-18-1 overall and 12-8 in the NEC.

Junior Andy Meyers put the Hawks ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first, as the first baseman connected on his eighth home run of the season, on an 0-1 pitch, down the rightfield line.

Jason Maiella cut the lead in the half in the top of the second with his solo shot to left field, his third homer of the season.

The Hawks tacked on five runs, loading the bases twice in the sixth inning, for a 7-1 advantage.

Howard (6-6) was saddled with the loss for the Pioneers, allowing six runs on five hits and four walks, over 5.1 frames. The senior also registered eight strikeouts.

Monmouth and Sacred Heart are set to play an NEC doubleheader on Friday afternoon, with first pitch set for noon.
