The Sacred Heart field hockey team dominated Siena from the opening whistle in their 3-0 victory at Campus Field Friday afternoon. The Pioneers outshot Siena 32-3 as the Saints only managed a single shot on goal. Freshman Chelsea Carlson (Peterborough, NH) netted two goals in the second half, sealing the Sacred Heart win.
The Pioneers (5-10, 3-1 NEC) controlled every aspect of the game early and opened the scoring on a Dana Luhrs (Milford, PA) tally with the assist coming from Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY). The Saints (0-12, 0-3 NEC) were able to hang tough the rest of the frame turning away seven more shots on goal. The Pioneers also earned a penalty shot with 12:38 to play in the half. Melissa Mazin (Putnam Valley, NY) took the shot sending a bullet towards the top left corner of the net. Siena starting goal keeper Renee Clavette came up huge for the Saints with the diving save to keep it a one goal game.
Sacred Heart struggled to put the game away early in the second half as Siena focused on playing physical defense. The Pioneers finally earned themselves an insurance goal on a Carlson tally from a penalty corner taken by Eye. Whitney Russo (Waterville, ME) also earned an assist on the play putting the Pioneers up 2-0. Carlson struck one final time with 4:38 to play on an unassisted goal, burying the Saints and ensuring the victory.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday as they welcome conference rival Lock Haven to campus field, game time is set for 12:00 pm.
