Final Stats
Fairfield, CT -
The Brown field hockey team scored three goals in the first twenty minutes of the game and Sacred Heart's late flurry of offense was not enough as the Bears held on for a 3-2 victory Tuesday afternoon at Campus Field. Freshman Abigal Taft scored two goals for Brown while senior Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY) netted a pair for Sacred Heart.
Taft scored the first two goals of the games three minutes apart. At the 9:08 mark she was in the middle of the circle to deflect a shot by Sara Eaton past SHU goaltender Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT) who was making her first career start. Just after the 12 minute mark Taft was standing at the side of the net and tipped home a pass from Natalie Harrington to make it 2-0 for the Bears. Laura Iacovetti made it 3-0 with a penalty stroke goal at the 17:29 mark.
Sacred Heart started its comeback late in the first half when junior Whitney Russo (Waterville, ME) ripped a shot from the top of the circle that Eye tipped home with 4:30 left in the half. After several wasted opportunities in the second half, Eye finally made it 3-2 in 65th minute the when she deflected another Russo shot past Brown goaltender Lauren Kessler. With two more goals Eye now has 12 on the season and 20 multi-goal games in her career.
The Pioneers had several opportunities to tie the game in the final minutes. Eye had two breakaways thwarted by the Bears defense, the second time when Kessler charged out and Eye tripped over her and tumbled to the turf. SHU had 19 penalty corner attempts but was able to score just one goal off of them.
The Pioneers had 25-15 shot advantage but only 12 of those shots were on goal. Kessler made eight saves for Brown to preserve the win. Stow stopped three shots while senior Whitney Mills (Harrisburg, PA) relieved in the second half and stopped six shots to keep SHU in the game.
Sacred Heart is back in action Friday when they visit Rider as Northeast Conference play kicks into high gear. Game time is 4:00 pm.
