LAWRENCE, Kan. (November 14, 2008) - Kansas junior guard Danielle McCray scored 22 of her game-high 29 points in the first half as the Jayhawks broke open a seven point game with a 30-6 run before halftime on their way to a 106-64 win over Sacred Heart at Allen Fieldhouse Friday night. The Pioneers shot 34% (19-56) while turning it over 25 times as they allowed the most points in their Division I history in the loss.
The Pioneers (0-1) were in it early on as senior Stephanie Ryan (Coram, NY) scored six of her team's first seven points, putting SHU down just one, 8-7, three minutes in. KU's (1-0) McCray, who had the game's first points burying a three, started to get a hot hand as the Jayhawks opened a 23-16 lead heading into the half's second media timeout.
SHU freshman Callan Taylor (Overland Park, KS), making her collegiate debut in front of a loud, hometown cheering section, scored her first career basket on a lay-in underneath, getting fouled on the play. The freshman forward would have to wait out the media timeout before attempting to complete the three-point play, but her bucket at 11:50 proved to be the only points Sacred Heart would score for the next 8:45.
By the time a Ryan free throw hit the bottom of the net at the 3:05 mark the damage had been done as McCray led her team to 26-straight points during the drought, opening up a 49-18 lead. SHU sophomore point guard Maggie Cosgrove (Andover, MA) ended the Pioneer field goal drought by knocking down a three with 2:00 showing and Ryan followed with a three at the halftime horn but the damage was done as SHU went to the locker room chasing a 28-point Jayhawk lead.
The Jayhawks (1-0) kept their foot on the peddle to start the second half, ripping off a 12-2 run over the four minutes of action to open 64-27 lead on their way to a lopsided season-opening win. McCray shot 12-of-16 and hit five-of-seven from behind the arc as she tied her career-high to lead the way.
Also in double figures for the Jayhawks was Sade Morris who netted 15 while Krysten Boogaard had 11 in the win. LaCehlda Jacobs, Kelly Kohn and Porscha Weddington all had 10 points for KU. The Jayhawks hit a scorching 60% (43-72) and held a 43-30 edge on the boards.
For the Pioneers, Sowinski finished with 13 points, four rebounds and a pair of blocks in the loss. Taylor put up 10 in front of the hometown fans to go along with six rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Alisa Apo (Freehold, NJ) tallied 12 points in the loss.
The 106 points allowed by the Pioneers were the most in the school's Division I era that started in 1999-00 and the most allowed by any Ed Swanson coached team and just the second time a team has hit the century mark under his guidance. The last time SHU allowed over 100-points in a loss was in the 1991 season, a 101-67 loss at Stone Hill.
The Pioneers will continue on to Milwaukee, Wisconsin on this season opening road trip as they take on the Marquette Golden Eagles on Monday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm C.S.T.
