Reserve infielder Chris Parkinson had four hits and Chris Pickering allowed just one run over five innings on the hill to lead the University of Rhode Island to a 9-3 win over Sacred Heart in a non-conference game Tuesday. The Rams took advantage of four SHU errors, as well has four walks and three hit batters.
Pioneer starter Mike Drowne gave up a hit and walked a pair of batters in the first inning. An error by the SHU infield with one out allowed two runs to score. The Rams made it 3-0 in the second when shortstop Dan Rhault singled and later scored on a grounder by Zoey Angulo.
URI, 20-19-1, opened up a 5-0 lead in the third, scoring twice of SHU reliever Corey Corcoran. With two out and no one on, Corcoran hit Rhault and Parkinson followed with an RBI double. Angulo chased Parkinson home with a single.
First baseman Mike O'Malley led off the fourth for the Rams with his third homer of the season over the left field fence. Rob Deveney doubled and scored on a single by Shaun Hagey. Hagey later scored on a grounder to first that Corcoran dropped for an error covering the bag.
Pickering faced the minimum number of batters through the first four innings, allowing just one hit, a leadoff single by Tantillo in the fourth. He was erased on a double play. Down 8-0, the Pioneers finally got on the board in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Steve Armato that scored Chris Whittemore who had singled.
Back-to-back doubles by Matt Fitton and Armato in the seventh cut the URI lead to 8-2. Armato scored on a grounder by Tantillo to make it 8-3.
The Rams scored an insurance run off reliever Mick Oswald in the ninth inning on an RBI single by Jeff Cammans.
The Pioneers will be in action on Friday at FDU starting at 3 p.m. as the start of a four-game NEC weekend series.
