Junior Jared Balbach allowed just one earned run in six innings but got no support from his offense as the Pioneer baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision at Wagner College in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.
Sacred Heart took a 1-0 lead in the third when JJ Edwards and Chris Whittemore walked with two outs. Tyler Santos chased Edwards home with a single through the left side of the infield.
Wagner got the equalizer in the bottom of the frame when Chris Drechsel singled home Damian Csakai.
The Seahawks got what would end up being the winning run in the fourth inning when Joe Jamison and Tom DiPietro led off the frame with singles. Seth Boyd sacrificed both runners along, but Balbach got Dan Morvay on a comebacker to the mound for the second out. Balbach walked the next hitter to load the bases and Jamison scored when catcher Steve Armato was charged with a passed ball with Csakai at the plate.
Andy Wells threw the first five innings for the Seahawks, allowing just two hits and a run, striking out seven and walking four. Andrew Huebner earned a save with two innings of relief work.
Balbach allowed eight hits in going the route for the Pioneers, striking out six and walking two.
