The defending Northeast Conference champion Pioneer women's bowling team completed the league portion of its schedule this weekend with a 6-3 mark to finish the year with a second place 20-7 record. SHU trails only nationally ranked number one Fairleigh Dickinson as the NEC field will be seeded for the 2011 Northeast Conference tournament, to be held March 26-27.
Sacred Heart (64-30, 20-7 NEC) started the weekend with a 926-853 triumph over Saint Francis (PA), Nicole Trudell (Coventry, RI) rolled a 216 in the victory. The Pioneers suffered their only loss of Saturday as Long Island upset SHU, 953-870. Chevi Panzanella (Brewster, NY) came in off the bench in game three to shoot a match high 236 as Sacred Heart rebounded with a 1005-886 rout of #13 Adelphi. The Pioneers closed the day coming out on top of a tight 1025-981 decision against #7 New Jersey City. Trudell exploded with SHU's highest game of the weekend, shooting a 258 in the win.
Sarah Pelletier (Lewiston, ME) got off to a fast start on day two as the senior left-hander posted a 256 to lead SHU in a 950-805 blowout of Monmouth. In the second match of the day Trudell, Panzanella, and Jackie Carbonetto (Blauvelt, NY) shot over the 200 barrier but the Pioneers fell to #8 Kutztown, 1022-986. Sacred Heart then notched back-to-back victories over #15 St. Francis (NY) and #19 Saint Peter's. Erin Weinman (Temple, PA) chipped in team highs of 194 and 215 in the pair of Pioneer "W's". However, SHU would suffer a loss in the final clash of the meet as #1 FDU got past Sacred Heart, 995-916.
Sacred Heart will begin the defense of its 2010 tournament title as they take on the seventh-seeded Blackbirds of Long in the quarterfinal round. The 2011 NEC tournament will be held March 26-27 at Parkway Lanes in New Jersey.
