Pioneers Score Six in a Row, Throttle Stevenson 7-3

Bridgeport, CT – The Sacred Heart women's hockey team scored six unanswered goals friday night to defeat the Stevenson Mustangs 7-3 at the Wonderland of Ice. The Pioneers came alive in the third period scoring 5 goals to emphatically put away Stevenson. Stevenson is comprised of all freshmen with the exception of one sophomore. The Pioneers improve to 5-6-1 on the season, while the Mustangs fall to 3-2. Sacred Heart outshot the Mustangs 38-27. Junior goaltender Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) earned the win for the Pioneers, notching 24 saves. Sacred Heart had four power play goals.  

Stevenson came out firing against the Pioneers, scoring two goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead into intermission. A pair of freshman for the Mustangs accounted for both goals. First Mackenzie Taggart scored on an assist from Molly O'Neil and then O'Neil scored on an assist from Taggart. Sacred Heart would finally get on the board early in the second period on a goal from junior forward Sara Hanna (Lino Lakes, MN). The goal was assisted by sophomore Melissa Robbins (Nashua, NH) and senior Maura Leahy (Ashburnham, MA). Stevenson would then strike again to take a 3-1 lead with a goal from freshman Tori Emoff on assists by O'Neil and freshman Madison Lange. That would be all she wrote for the Mustangs, as the Pioneers would score the game's final six goals.

At the end of the second period Robbins would find the back of the net cutting the score to 3-2, assists credited to sophomore Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham,MA) and Catie Ladner (Chaska, MN). Sophomore Cara Curran would tie the game up for the Pioneers scoring at 1:59 in the third, assisted by sophomore Alex Davis (Pembroke, MA). The Pioneers would go on to break it wide open from there. Sophomore Natasha Klinoff (Concord, MA) put in a goal from Ladner and sophomore Meaghan Souza (Wilmington, MA). Heather Daley found the back of the net on assists by junior Jennie Robinson (Hyde Park, NY) and sophomore Alanna Woodford (Scituate, MA). Sophomore Whitney Henderson (Elkins Park, PA knocked in a power play goal at 8:24 on assists by Klinoff and Ladner. Hanna would close out the scoring for the Pioneers on assists by Robinson and Stathopoulos. 

The Pioneers take on the Mustangs again tomorrow afternoon at the Wonderland at 2 PM.
