Pioneers Drop MAAC Opener at Quinnipiac, 4-1

HAMDEN, CT (October 13, 2013) - The Sacred Heart field hockey team lost its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 4-1.  This marks the first season of field hockey in the MAAC.  The Pioneers fall to 4-8 overall on the season with the loss.  

Quinnipiac (8-5, 1-0 MAAC) scored three second half goals to break open a 1-1 game at the half en route to the win.  Four different Bobcats scored in the win.  Jennalise Taylor gave QU a 1-0 lead just over seven minutes into action, scoring off a feed by Jessica Rusin.

The Pioneers responded quickly as senior Stephanie Frye (Walpole, MA) scored an unassisted goal just 2:25 later.  The two teams would stay locked at 1-1 for the rest of the first half with the Bobcats holding an 11-2 edge on shots while earning eight penalty corners.

The Bobcats broke through in the 44th minute as Megan Osantisch scored what would prove to be the game-winner.  Rusin and Kristin Engelke tacked on goal in the 60th and 67th minutes for the 4-1 win.

SHU's Mary Altepeter (Chesterfield, MO) made seven saves in goal.

The Pioneers are back in action next Sunday, October 20th when they host Robert Morris in MAAC action.
