FAIRFIELD, CONN. (November 1, 2013)—The Sacred Heart field hockey team was shut out by Siena 2-0 on Senior Day Friday evening at Campus Field. The Saints got their first MAAC win, while the Pioneers fall to 4-12 on the season and are still looking for their first conference win.

Siena seemed to have control in the first half outshooting the Pioneers 7-3. The Saints notched their first goal in the 20th minute of the game. Off the corner, Megan Boze got the ball from Megan Meyers at the top of the circle and found the angle to shoot the ball right past SHU goalkeeper Mary Altepeter (Chesterfield, Mo.). Just moments before the end of the period, Siena tacked on another goal. Zig-zagging around the defenders, Siena's Katherine Bowie and Gabrielle Sullivan had just Altepeter keeping them from a goal. As they moved into the circle, Bowie dished the ball to Sullivan who managed a straight shot to the back of the goal to give the Saints a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.

The Pioneers turned up the offense in the second half, maintaining possession of the ball for the majority of the period. Despite being outshot in the first half, Sacred Heart outshot the Saints 8-4 in the second half. SHU put five of those shots on goal, but failed to get one by Siena goalkeeper Beth Meyers. Altepeter, who tallied three saves in the game, and a very strong Pioneer defense rendered the Saints scoreless in the second half as well.

Sacred Heart heads to Bryant on Sunday to face off with the Bulldogs in the last game of the season.
