READING, PENN. (November 10, 2013)—The Sacred Heart bowling team finished fifth this past weekend at the first Northeast Conference meet of the 2013-14 season after going 3-6 against conference opponents at Bowl-O-Rama in Reading, Penn.
Sacred Heart dropped the first three matches of the tournament to Kutztown (1064-929), Fairleigh Dickinson (933-919) and LIU Brooklyn (1024-906). SHU left numerous open frames, forcing Head Coach Becky Kregling to make substitutions due to poor shooting early. It was the Pioneers' worst start to the NEC season since the inception of the conference in 2008 when they also started with three losses.
They finally picked up their first win in Saturday's final match against Adlephi. Seniors Nicole Trudell (Coventry, R.I.) and Chevi Panzanella (Brewster, N.Y.) stepped it up in the 969-949 win with Trudell shooting 246 and Panzanella 223.
In their best showing of the weekend, the Pioneers posted three 200+ games in the 1024-939 win over LIU Brooklyn. Trudell had her best match of the tournament with all strikes and nine-spares in the anchor position.
Sacred Heart picked up its final win of the weekend over Fairleigh Dickinson 948-935 coming back in the last game with a triple by freshman Amanda Tyrell (Selden, N.Y.), Higgins and Trudell.
SHU ended the weekend with a loss to host-school Kutztown 977-841. Tyrell performed best in the match throwing half her balls for strikes and the other half for spares.
"Our youngness showed," said Kregling, "but that gives us something to work on to be ready for the next NEC meet in December."
The Pioneers are back in action this weekend at the UMES Hawk Classic.
