Box Score

Emmitsburg, MD – Junior Dan Perez and freshman Jayson Sullivan both hit two run home runs as the Sacred Heart Pioneers beat Mount St. Mary's, 7-1, in game one of their Friday doubleheader at Straw Family Stadium. SHU improves to 26-21 overall and 21-9 in the NEC this season.

Junior Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) got the start in game one for the Pioneers. Leiningen tossed the complete game seven innings, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out seven to improve to 6-3 on the season.

SHU wasted no time getting on the board, taking the 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Freshman Brian Lamboy (Manalapan, NJ) got the rally started with a one out walk, followed by a base hit from senior John Murphy (Seymour, CT). Lamboy, who was stealing on the pitch went all the way around to third base and would score on a Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) ground out.

SHU would add on to their lead in the third inning. Sophomore Kenny Byram (Ponte Vedra, FL) led off the inning with a walk, followed by a base hit by senior Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY). Byram who was running on the pitch, reached third base and would score on a sacrifice fly from Lamboy. After a Murphy ground out, Perez smacked a two out, two run home run over the right field wall to make it 4-0 SHU.

Leiningen's lone blemish came in the third inning, when he let up a two out solo homerun to Mountaineer shortstop Brandon Scott.

Sacred Heart was not finished with the long ball on the afternoon. In the sixth inning, freshman Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY) followed Perez's lead and stroked a long ball of his own over the left field wall, scoring Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) and making it 6-1 SHU.

The Pioneers added one more in the seventh with Boisture coming around to score on a double play. Boisture went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored in the game.

SHU and Mount St. Mary's will start the second game of their doubleheader around 1:30 pm.
