Pioneers Tripped Up at Holy Cross, 1-0

Box Score

WORCESTER, MA (September 15, 2013) - The Holy Cross Crusaders scored on their first shot of the day Sunday afternoon and that would be all they needed to come away with a 1-0 win over the visiting Sacred Heart Pioneers Sunday afternoon.  The Pioneers split their two games this weekend and are now 3-3 on the season.

The Crusaders (2-2) got only one shot off in the first half but they made it count, producing the game-winner with the try.  Coming off their only penalty corner of the first half, freshman Lauren Sutherland ripped a shot from the top of the circle, deflecting in off SHU goalkeeper Mary Altepeter (Chesterfield, MO).

SHU had a pair of offensive chances to score in the first half on a pair of penalty corners.  Sophomore Rachel Claroni (Hershey, PA) got off a pair of shots but HC goalkeeper Maya Langman turned away both.

In the second half, the Pioneers turned up the offensive heat with five straight penalty corners. Langman and the Crusader defense kept the Pioneers at bay, making five saves during the stretch. SHU would go without a shot over the final six minutes en route to the road loss.

Altepeter would make five saves in the loss.

SHU is home on Friday, September 20th when they play host to the Fairfield Stags at 7 pm.
