Granito's Two Goals Lead Pioneers to 3-1 Victory over Vermont

Box Score
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Nicole Granito scored both the opener and game-winner, as the Sacred Heart University field hockey team bounced back from a defeat yesterday to defeat Vermont 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The eventual game-winner came in the 52nd minute after Olivia Volpe had a one-on-one opportunity denied by Lena Benwood but earned a penalty corner. Granito was able to get her stick on the ensuing Rachel Claroni shot and deflect it into the cage. Coming into the contest, the sophomore did not have a collegiate goal.  Claroni's assist was her third of the season.

The Pioneers added to their lead three minutes later when Sarah Bergman converted a penalty stroke. It was the second penalty stroke goal in three games for Bergman as she now has two goals on the year.

It was the sophomore's first goal of her collegiate career. It was also Tolli's first career collegiate assist. Vermont (0-11) responded quickly to tie it at 1-1 just one minute later with a Taylor Gaines goal from a penalty stroke.

SHU goalkeeper Mary Altepeter saved an Ashley McDonald shot and then saved two consecutive Catamount one minute later to keep the game scoreless. Sacred Heart's first shot on net came in the 15th minute on a shot by Liz Bergman after a penalty corner. Her initial attempt was blocked, but she was able to gather the rebound a fire a shot on net that was saved.

Altepeter made five of her six saves in the first half as she picked up the victory.  Benwood also made six saves in defeat. After getting outshot in the first half 7-6, the Pioneers outshot the Catamounts 10-3 in the second period.
