BALTIMORE, MD (November 16, 2014)—Lauren Hoffman ranked second among individual bowlers with a 214 average earning a spot on the UMES Hawk Classic All-Tournament Team this weekend. The Sacred Heart bowling team went into Sunday's match play as the No. 4 seed, but three losses to Sam Houston State 4-1, UMES 4-2, and Saint Francis U 3-2 had the Pioneers finish sixth in the tournament.
Sacred Heart got a slow start on Friday, losing two close matches to teams ranked in the top 10—Sam Houston State 926-887, UMES 1062-867. After bouncing back with a trio of wins over Delaware State, 995-857, Howard, 876-783, and LIU Brooklyn, 1034-909, the Pioneers finished day one of the tournament in eighth place in overall pinfall. Amanda Tyrrell led the squad averaging 20.3 pins per frame, while SHU averaged 187 combined per game.
SHU bounced back and was the second highest scoring team on Saturday averaging 199 per game. They opened day two with three wins, including a 1017-940 win over No. 9 Stephen F. Austin, before suffering a 19-point loss to the Red Flash, 1063-1044. The Pioneers learned from their mistakes, and moved on to a huge 1026-966 win over Vanderbilt in the fifth match. Led by Courtney McGinn and Hoffman, who tallied 225 and 221 respectively, Sacred Heart rounded out Saturday with the 996-785 win over Franklin Pierce.
The Pioneers finished qualifying rounds in fourth place in overall pinfall, just 47 pins out of second, matching them up with the reigning NCAA Champion Sam Houston State in the first round of match play.
