Midlothian, Va. (November 23, 2014)—Three Pioneers were named to the All-Tournament Team as the Sacred Heart bowling team won the Jeannette Lee Invitational hosted by Virginia Union this weekend. Sophomore Lauren Hoffman led all players averaging 209.83 pins per game. Teammates Jayna Tartaglia and Sarah Rhodes were right behind her in second and third place averaging 202.83 and 198.71 pins per game respectively.
The Pioneers were a perfect 6-0 on Friday in baker style competition, picking up big wins over Bowie State, who entered match play as the No. 2 seed, 954-922, and Cheney State 984-828. SHU got its only loss of the tournament in Saturday's opening match, falling to Felician 960-903. They won their next three matches over Livingstone, Virginia Union and Chowan by considerable margins before tying Franklin Pierce 991-991. The Pioneers still came out with the victory after winning the tie-breaker against the Ravens 97-75. Sacred Heart rounded out qualifying with a 990-802 win over Cheyney to be seeded first in Sunday's match play.
Sacred Heart opened match play against the only team who handed them a loss during qualifying, No. 4 Felician. The Golden Falcons took one game off the Pioneers, but SHU moved onto the championship match winning the best-of-seven match 4-1.
Next up was the three seed, Cheyney State. The Pioneers dropped the first game to the Lady Wolves 195-175, but rebounded winning the next three (223-200, 210-185, 190-177). Seemingly on its way to a victory, SHU had the edge in game five, but Cheyney came back to cause a tie at 182 forcing a sixth game. Sacred Heart pulled off the win though, taking the final game 202-190.
After a break for Thanksgiving weekend, the Pioneers are back in action December 6-7 at the second Northeast Conference meet of the year at Parkway Lanes in Elmwood Park, N.J.
