Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Evan Kelley scored a season-high 27, including 19 in the first half, and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds as the Sacred Heart men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating Campbell, 72-61, on Sunday afternoon at the William H. Pitt Center. The Pioneers took their second lead with 3:25 remaining in the first half and did not trail the remainder of the game. SHU moves to 2-3 on the year, while the Camels drop to 1-4.
Traling by five with 5:16 remaining in the first half, the Pioneers closed the half with an 18-5 flurry, including two 8-0 runs, engineered by Kelley. The senior guard scored 12 straight Sacred Heart points at one point, on 3-4 shooting and 6-6 from the line. The first 8-0 run gave the Pioneers a 27-24 lead with 3:02 left in the first before the Camels answered with a 5-2 stetch to tie the game at 29 for the sixth time 2:06 before the break.
Sacred Heart responded by scoring the final eight points over the last 1:41, capped by a Kelley layup at the buzzer to give SHU its largest lead at 37-29. Tevin Falzon started the run with two free throws followed by four straight points from Cane Broome. SHU used 15-17 shooting from the free throw line, led by 9-10 form Kelley, to take the halftime lead.
Campbell would open the second half with six straight points to cut and eight point halftime deficit to two points at 37-35 after two straight baskets by D.J Mason. Phil Gaetano ended the run with a three-pointer to increase the lead back to five.
The Camels would again get the game within two points at the 14:42 mark. From there the Pioneers would answer with a 12-0 run that would ultimately seal the victory. After Steve Glowiak started the run with five points, De'von Barnett finished it with seven straight of his own, capped by a steal and transition layup to stretch the Pioneer to its largest of the game at 52-38 with 10:21 remaining.
The Sacred Heart lead reached 14 again when Glowiak made a three point basket with 7:17 remaining to make the score 61-47. Campbell could not get the deficit under seven the remainder of the game.
SHU held its third opponent of the year to under forty percent shooting as the Camels shot 37.3 percent (19-51). The Pioneers forced 17 Campbell turnovers, which led to 20 points. Sacred Heart finished the game at 44.6 percent (25-56). Both teams made 18 foul shots.
Barnett was the only other Pioneer to finish in double figures at 11. Gaetano tallied four assists to put him alone in sixth place on the All-Time NEC assists list.
The Camels had three score in double figures, led by Reco McCarter at 19. Ryan Andrew had nine points and nine rebounds.
Campbell jumped out to a 5-0 lead 1:33 into the game after Andrew Ryan buried a three-pointer. SHU would answer with a 6-0 stetch of their own, capped by four straight Filip Nowicki points to make it 6-5 with 16:56 remaining.
The teams traded baskets throughout the middle portion of the first half with neither leading by more than three points until D.J. Mason converted a layup to tie the Camels largest lead at 24-19 with 5:16 left before the break.
Sacred Heart will return to the road for a 7 pm matchup with Colgate on Wednesday. The Raiders have started the year 1-5.
