Box Score HAMILTON, N.Y. – Trailing by one point with 6 seconds remaining, Phil Gaetano found Jordan Allen for a wide open dunk off of an inbound play in what would prove to be the game-winning basket, as the Sacred Heart men's basketball team won its second straight game to move to 3-3 on the year. De'von Barnett blocked the ensuing Colgate attempt at the buzzer to preserve a 71-70 win. Cane Broome led the Pioneers with a season high 21 points, while Allen added 14, also a season-high. The loss drops Colgate to 1-6.
Trailing 68-63 with 2:04 remaining, Broome made two free throws to cut the deficit to three. After forcing a five second violation on the ensuing inbound, Broome then nailed a jumper to pull the Pioneers within one with two minutes left to play. The Raiders responded with two Ethan Jacob free throws after Jacob grabbed an offensive board and got fouled on the put back. Allen answered right back with a layup to cut the lead back to one at 70-69 with 1:06 remaining.
Neither team led by more than six points throughout the entire contest. Sacred Heart shot 47.5 percent from the field, while holding the Raiders to 41.2 percent from the field and forcing 19 turnovers that led to 21 points. Colgate outrebounded SHU 46-28 and went 24-32 (75%) from the line. SHU was 11-21 (52.4%) at the charity stripe.
After Colgate took a 44-39 lead with 17:40 remaining in the game, Sacred Heart produced its largest run of the game with a 9-0 spurt over the next 1:36. Broome started the run with a three point play, and Evan Kelley finished it with a layup to extend the lead to a second-half high four at 48-44. Colgate came right back with a 14-4 surge to put the Raiders ahead by a game-high six points at 62-56 with 7:15 left in the game. Colgate went 5-6 from the line during the run, which was ended with two Matt McMullen foul shots.
Gaetano dished out a season-high eight assists. Tevin Falzon led the Pioneers with eight rebounds. Jacobs led the Raiders with 20 points, while Austin Tillotson added 15. Luke Roh chipped in 9 points and eleven rebound.
The first half saw eight ties and neither team hold a lead of more than five points. Sacred Heart jumped out to its largest lead of the game 8:08 before the break. Steve Glowiak first drained a three-pointer, and then Broome recorded a steal and transition dunk on the following possession to stretch the lead to 21-16. Colgate quickly responded with six straight to retake the lead at 22-21 with 5:23 remaining after two baskets by Roh and two free throws.
Colgate took its largest first half lead with 23 seconds left after McMullen made two free throws to make it 37-33. Broome brought the Pioneers back within two going into the half with a jumper with seven seconds remaining.
The Pioneers will return to the William H. Pitt Center on Saturday for a 3:30 PM tip against another Patriot League member, Holy Cross. Last season the Pioneers fell to the Crusaders, 122-118, in a thrilling double overtime contest. Holy Cross is 4-1 on the year after a 74-57 win at Albany tonight.
