Women's Basketball Falls to Mount St. Mary's 76-63

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (February 15, 2014)—The Sacred Heart women's basketball team fell to Mount St. Mary's 76-63 Saturday afternoon in the William H. Pitt Center. SHU was led by junior Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.), who tallied 18 points, while freshman Caitlyn Abela (South Easton, Mass.) tied her career-high with 16 points. With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 7-6 in Northeast Conference play, and 10-14 overall.

Tough defense on both ends left both teams scoreless for the first two minutes before Sydney Henderson put the Mount on the board with a triple.

Mount St. Mary's held onto the small lead, but with just under 13 minutes left in the first half, Abela and Katie Shepard (Lone Tree, Colo.) landed back-to-back-to-back threes giving the Pioneers their first lead of the game, 16-12.

The Mountaineers went on a 10-point run, as they held the Pioneers scoreless for nearly the last four minutes of the half, lifting MSM to an eight-point lead, 28-20. They managed to hold onto the lead to send Sacred Heart into halftime trailing 33-24.

The Mount continued to expand its lead in the second half, taking its largest lead of 22 points on a layup from Henderson with 9:25 left to play.

Sacred Heart hosts St. Francis Brooklyn Monday night at 7:00 p.m.
