Dreher's Walk-off Clinches Pioneers' 5-4 Win Over Saint Peter's

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD (March 23, 2014)—With the score tied at four and one out in the bottom of the seventh, senior Annie Dreher (Saugus, Calif.) sent the game-winning homer over the left field fence clinching the Sacred Heart softball team's eighth win of the season, 5-4, over Saint Peter's in the final day of the UMBC Classic. Dreher went 3-for-4 in the game scoring two runs.

Rookie pitcher Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) held the Peacocks scoreless through three innings before giving up a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning. But she held them to just one, and recorded a one-two-three fifth.

Meanwhile, Kate Nadler (Southbury, Conn.) crossed the plate in the second inning for the game's first run after working a lead off walk. Jenn Robillard (Plainville, Mass.), Andrea Sidor (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and Jade Bowins (Frederick, Md.) also walked moving Nadler around the bases.

Pioneer bats were quiet in the third and fourth innings, putting just two runners on base, before expanding their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth. With the leadoff batter popping out to the shortstop, Dreher recorded her second hit of the game, a single down the leftfield line. Saint Peter's starter Erica Colon got Justin Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) to swing at a third strike before walking Kelyn Fillmore (Simi Valley, Calif.). With the two runners on, Nadler cleared the centerfield fence with her second homerun of the season.

Carlson got two quick outs in the top of the sixth, but Nicole Olmedo knocked her second homer of the day sparking a three-run rally to tie the game. Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) came in to get the final out and shut down the Peacocks in the seventh. She was the winning pitcher of record improving her season record to 4-3.

Sacred Heart will face Connecticut Tuesday, March 25 in a single game beginning at 3:00 p.m.
