SHU Softball Splits with Temple and Niagara

The Sacred Heart softball team went 1-1 Wednesday in the Rebel Games. After falling to Temple 4-0, the Pioneers picked up their third win of the season with the 1-0 victory over Niagara.

 

The Owls held Sacred Heart to just two hits in the day's opening game. Anna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) got her first loss of the season after giving up all four runs in just 1 2/3 innings. Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) came in from the bullpen and shut Temple down. The junior only gave up one hit on a bunt single in 4 1/3 innings.

 

Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) picked up her first win of the season holding Niagara scoreless with just three hits through 5 2/3 innings. After getting the start in the first game, Mallory came in in relief with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth. She got the Purple Eagle's fifth batter to ground out, and struck out the side in the top of the seventh recording her first save of the year.

 

The Pioneers scored their only run in the bottom of the first. Senior Annie Dreher (Saugus, Calif.) doubled with two outs before rookie Kelyn Fillmore (Simi Valley, Calif.) knocked her home.

 

Sacred Heart face Akron and Temple Friday after an off-day tomorrow.
