Sacred Heart Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat Saint Louis 3-1

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, CONN. – The Sacred Heart University Field Hockey team overcame an early deficit to come back and win their second straight as they beat Saint Louis 3-1 at Campus Field on Friday night. Two goals in a 42 second span late in the first half proved to be enough for the Pioneers.

SHU's Liz Bergman evened the game at 1-1 in the 29th minute after she received a Christine Mace pass from a penalty corner. Bergman fired one of her game-high 15 shots from the edge of the circle past Saint Louis goalie Megan Depew-Brady to even the score. For Bergman it was her first goal of the season after a team-high five in 2013. Forty two seconds later the Pioneers were ahead after a Bergman shot was deflected in by Olivia Volpe. The goal was Volpe's first career collegiate goal.

Lauren Harrison gave Sacred Heart (3-2) some breathing room early in the second when she scored to increase the lead to 3-1. Nichole Tolli sent a dangerous cross into the circle that deflected off the keeper and found Harrison in front of the net. For Harrison it was her third goal of the season.

Despite outshooting the Billikens 13-3 in the first period, Sacred Heart found themselves down early on a Saint Louis (0-5) goal by Faith Mackin. Kristin Collins fired two consecutive shots on net only to be denied by Mary Altepeter, but Mackin eventually grabbed the second rebound and beat Altepeter to make it 1-0 in the 15th minute.

SHU controlled most of the play and as a result outshot the Billikens 22-5. Altepeter (3-2) was strong when called upon recording four saves to earn the win. Saint Louis goalie Megan Depew-Brady (0-5) saved nine shots in defeat. Sacred Heart also had a strong edge in penalty corners taking 18 compared to just 3 for the Billikens.

The Pioneers will look to make it three straight on Sunday when they travel to Holy Cross. The match is slated to start at 5:05 PM.
