Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Sacred Heart University field hockey team shutout Holy Cross 2-0 on Sunday evening to win their third straight match. A first half Liz Bergman goal would turn out to be the game-winner as the Pioneers held the Crusaders to only one shot on goal.
Bergman's goal came in the 21st minute when her shot from the middle of the circle deflected off a defender and found the back of the net. It was Bergman's second goal of the season as she has now scored in back to back games.
Christine Mace sealed the victory for SHU (4-2) with five minutes remaining when she deflected a Lauren Harrison shot into the net for a 2-0 lead. Mace now has a team-high eight points on the season.
The shutout was Sacred Heart's first of the season. Holy Cross' (2-5) only shot on net was saved by Mary Altepeter in the 28th minute. Shots proved hard to come by as the two teams combined for just eight all game. Sacred Heart held the slight edge 5-3.
SHU will travel to cross-town rival Fairfield next Friday afternoon. The match is scheduled to start at 3 PM.
