Box Score LOCK HAVEN, Penn. – Two first half goals and eight saves by Mary Altepeter propelled the Sacred Heart University field hockey to a 2-1 victory over Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon. The win was SHU's first ever over the Bald Eagles as they had come into the matchup 0-11 all time, including a 4-0 loss last season.
Christine Mace opened the scoring for Sacred Heart (5-4) in the 12th minute, after she deflected in a Liz Bergman shot from a penalty corner. Mace now leads the Pioneers with five goals, while Bergman has a team-high four assists.
Lock Haven (7-3), coming off a 2-1 victory over La Salle on Friday night, would equalize in the 26th minute after Megan Wenrich found a rebound in front of the net and knocked it in to level the score at 1-1. Sacred Heart responded quickly to regain the lead less than four minutes later when Lauren Lawson knocked in a tough angled rebound after a Nicole Granito shot. The goal was the second of the season for the freshman and gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead heading in to the half.
SHU's best chance at a third goal came in the 41st minute. Lauren Harrison had her shot saved by Lock Haven goalkeeper Elaina White and Danielle Gallagher followed with an attempt that struck the post.
Altepeter was forced to save three shots in the final 15 minutes to secure the victory for SHU. With the win, she improves her record to 5-4 on the season. White recorded three saves in the defeat. Lock Haven outshot the Pioneers 15-10 for the game including 8-4 in the second half. The Bald Eagles also held the advantage in penalty corners at 13-9.
Sacred Heart will look to finish their trip to Pennsylvania 2-0 tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Lehigh for a 1 pm start.
