Box Score STATEN ISLAND – After Sacred Heart's Jordan Allen converted a three point play cut the lead to, 61-58, with 6:37 remaining, Wager College closed the game on a 14-6 run to ultimately pull away to away for a, 75-64, victory on Thursday night at the Spiro Sports Center. Cane Broome, Evan Kelley, and Steve Glowiak scored 12, 11, and 10, respectively, in the loss that snaps the Pioneers two game winning streak and drops them to 9-13 and 3-6 in the Northeast Conference. Marcus Burton scored 21 of his 26 points in the second half, and shot 10-16 from the floor, to lead the Seahawks in the win, which improves them to 7-13 and 5-4 in league play.
It was Burton who ignited the ultimate run that clinched the game for the Seahawks. He scored seven of the Seahawks nine points in a 9-2 flurry after the three point play that put Wagner up, 70-59, with 3:30 left in the game. He started it with a layup 38 seconds after the Allen's free throw and then ended it with a trifecta to put the Seahawks up 11. SHU would only get as close as nine for the remainder of the game, 73-64, after De'von Barnett's layup with just 51 seconds before the buzzer.
Both teams shot in a similar percentage, with Wagner converting 44.4 percent of its shots to Sacred Heart's 43.1 percent. The Seahawks shot 51.6 percent (16-31) in the second half, including making 6 of their 10 three pointers. It was free throws that plagued the Pioneers, as they only shot 16-33 (48.5 percent) from the line. The Seahawks went 12-19. SHU also went 4-19 from beyond the arch, including 0-8 in the second half. WC held a, 45-36, edge on the glass.
The Pioneers, who held a three point lead at the half, maintained their lead for the first six minutes out of the locker room. The lead reached a SHU-high six, 39-33, when Allen made a layup with 17:07 remaining. The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes, until Wagner scored four straight to tie the game for the first time in the second half, 43-43, when Burton made a layup at the 13:47 mark. That would be the last time SHU would have a lead, as they only managed to tie the game once for the remainder of the contest, when Broome converted a layup with 12:59 showing.
After Broome's layup, Marcus Burton hit consecutive three point baskets, the second with 11:51 left, to cap a 12-2 run and give Wagner a 51-45 advantage. The lead would stay between three and six until Glowiak went 2-3 from the foul line to get SHU within two, 56-54, with 9:11 on the clock. Wagner answered with five of the next six points, ending with a triple by Corey Henson, to take a, 61-56, lead 1:03 before Allen's three point play.
No Pioneer had more than five rebounds, with De'von Barnett and Tevin Falzon each grabbing five each. Kelley had five boards as well, and also added three assists. Phil Gaetano tallied a game-high four assists.
Aaman was one point shy of a double double, grabbing 14 rebounds. He nearly recorded one in the second half alone, scoring seven of his nine points in addition to grabbing 10 boards. Henson and JoJo Cooper joined Burton in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. 9 of Cooper's 10 came after halftime, and he added seven rebounds and four assists.
The game stayed within four points for the first eight and a half minutes of the game. Sacred Heart used a 7-0 run to take the largest lead of the half, 16-11, after Barnet's layup with 11:17 remaining. It would be SHU's only field goal for just over seven minutes, with the Pioneers only making four three throws in that stretch. After Gaetano converted two form the line to make the lead, 20-16, with 7:27 on the clock, Wagner scored eight unanswered to take its largest first half lead. Nolan Long began the flurry with his three-point play and Burton's jumper less than two minutes later brought the score to, 24-20, with 5:16 showing.
After a Barnett free throw 3:31 before the half tied it back up at 24, the game stayed within three points until the buzzer. Stedman Allen's two free throws at the 2:30 mark momentarily gave the Seahawks athree point lead, but Gaetano's three point basket just 11 seconds later were the first of five straight for the Pioneers. Hugo Naurais stopped the run with a jumper with 1:08 left. Glowiak's triple with just one second on the clock sent Sacred Heart into the half with a, 33-30, lead.
The Pioneers return to the William H. Pitt Center on Saturday for a 2 pm tip against Mount St. Mary's. The game is part of a doubleheader with the women, which begins at 11:30, and is the annual Pack the Pitt game. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN3. The Mountaineers are in a three way tie for fourth place after falling at St. Francis Brooklyn Thursday night, 73-67 in overtime. The Mount stands at 9-11 and 5-4 in NEC play.
