
VMI Rallies To Take Down Pioneers 26-18

LEXINGTON, Va. – Patrick Skinner, Brendan Goldup, and Casey Mitchell each had pins Wednesday night in the Sacred Heart wrestling team's dual match at VMI Wednesday night at Cocke Hall, but the Keydets won the last five matches of the meet to come from behind and win 26-18.
Skinner opened the night by staking Sacred Heart to a 6-0 lead in the dual, pinning VMI's Dalton Henderson with 0:12 left in the first period of the 125-pound match. The Keydets got on the board at 133, as Hunter Starner beat Sacred Heart's Tim Johnson 9-4. Johnson was tied with Starner 2-2 in the second period, but a key takedown near the end of the period gave Starner a 6-3 lead. VMI then went ahead in the dual 7-6 with an 11-3 major decision by Emmitt Kelly over Jay Oakes at 141 pounds.
Goldup put the Pioneers back in front at 149, dominating his match against Jack Krall. The sophomore pinned Krall with 0:19 left in the opening period to give Sacred Heart a 12-7 lead. At 157, Mitchell needed just 40 seconds to takedown VMI's Samuel Paulay and also earned two back points. Mitchell then pinned the Keydet with 1:00 remaining in the first period to win the match and put Sacred Heart ahead 18-7.
Johnny Vrasidas jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in his match at 165 against Shabaka Johns. Vrasidas led 5-2 after the second period before Johns rallied in the third, taking down the Pioneer in the final seconds of regulation to tie the match 6-6. Johns then took down Vrasidas in overtime for the 8-6 win, making the dual score 18-10 Sacred Heart. At 174, Conan Schuster led Mark Darr 3-1 in the third period. Darr earned a takedown and back points in the final seconds of the match to win it 5-3 and make the score 18-13.
VMI got within two points of Sacred Heart at 184 pounds when Derek Thurman defeated Elliott Antler 4-3. Antler led 3-1 after two periods when Thurman earned a takedown in the final 10 seconds to win the match, putting the Keydets within two 18-16. At 197, Sasha Oliinyk trailed Urayoan Garcia 2-1 after the first period. Garcia earned two takedowns in the second to take a 6-2 lead, eventually earning a major decision with an 11-3 win that put the Keydets ahead 20-18. In the final match of the night, Juan Adams pinned Daniel Hayden in the heavyweight bout to make the final score 26-18.
The Pioneers are back on the mat Friday, January 9 with a 5 p.m. match at Princeton.
