Box Score NEW HAVEN, CONN. (October 16, 2015)—The Sacred Heart field hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to the Quinnipiac Bobcats Friday night at Johnson Field. Nichole Tolli and Rachel Claroni scored for the Pioneers, while Mary Altepeter recorded two saves.
SHU heads out to Smithfield, R.I. on Sunday to take on the Bryant Bulldogs at 1:00p.m.
First Half:
- In a very evenly-matched half, each team had two shots and each goalkeeper made one save
- Christine Mace took a corner for the Pioneers in the 34th minute finding Rachel Claroni at the top of the arch. The senior passed the ball to her right to Tolli whose hard shot found the back of the cage
Second Half:
- SHU had multiple opportunities to score early in the second half taking three corners in the first 10 minutes, but were unable to score
- In the 53rd minute, Lily Shemo evened the score at one. Kyle Johns picked up the rebound right in front of the goal setting up Shemo
- Less than three minutes later, Claroni dribbled the ball past a Bobcat defender into the circle and took a hard, left-handed shot for her third goal of the season
- The Pioneers held onto the lead down to the wire, but in the 69th minute the Bobcats were granted a corner. Michelle Federico took the corner dishing the ball up to Meghan McCullough who set up Angie King. King took a hard swing and evened the score at two sending the game into overtime
- Quinnipiac outshot Sacred Heart 7-5 in the second half, but both teams put four shots on goal
Overtime:
- Megan Osanitsch flew up the right side of the field, passing the ball to Shemo inside the circle. In the 77th minute of the game, Shemo found the cage again for the golden goal
