Box Score NEW HAVEN, CONN. (October 30, 2015)—The Sacred Heart field hockey team was shutout by Fairfield University 1-0 in the 2015 season finale. Despite a strong showing by the Pioneer offense, it was the Stags that managed the only goal of the game in the second half. Prior to the game, SHU honored graduating seniors Mary Altepeter, Christine Mace, Rachel Claroni and Nichole Dobachesky.
Sacred Heart finishes 2015 2-14 overall and 0-6 in MAAC play.
First Half:
- Outshooting Fairfield 12-3 in the first half, the Pioneers was in full force with ample chances to score in the taking five corners, but the Fairfield defense, including goalkeeper Caitlin Bennett who made eight saves, held SHU scoreless
- Altepeter cleaned up the area around the cage making the effort to keep the Stags out of the cage, including in the 18th minute when Ann Burgoyne was charging for the goal one-on-one with Altepeter. Taking a few steps in front of the goal, the senior knocked the ball away from Burgoyne before she had a chance to swing
Second Half:
- Fairfield spent a good portion of the second half in the offensive zone, but was unable to score until the 54th minute. Julie de Paeuw took a shot off the Stags' first corner, but it was stopped by Altepeter. Getting her own rebound, the junior flipped the ball high over Altepeter's head into the upper right corner of the cage for the game's only goal
- The offenses were nearly even in the second half, with both teams taking three shots and putting two on goal
