Box Score LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell's Isaac White made a driving and one layup with 1.3 seconds remaining to hand the Sacred Heart men's basketball its second loss in 48 hours in nonconference action at the Tsongas Center on Wednesday night.
The three-point play capped a 10-2 River Hawk run over the final 2:29 of the game. Cane Broome, who recorded his first career double double with game-highs of 20 points and ten rebounds, had previously tied the score for the 14th time on the evening with a transition layup with 23 seconds left. The basket ended a stretch of seven straight River Hawk points.
Up 82-77 with 3:53 left after Jordan Allen beat the shot clock buzzer with a 15-foot jumper, SHU would score just the two points the remainder of the contest. UMass Lowell's Jahad Thomas began the run to retake the lead with two foul shots at the 2:29 mark before Logan Primerano knotted things up at 82 with 1:59 showing after a three-point play. The comeback was complete when Mark Cornelius converted a layup with 1:19 left.
Allen joined Broome and two others in double digit scoring with 16 points and also added a game-high five assists and five rebounds. Chris Robinson set new career-highs with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Quincy McKnight contributed 11points.
Sacred Heart shot 58.5 percent in a loss, including 69.6 percent (16-23) in the second half, its highest percentage in a defeat since shooting 54.5 percent against Lipscomb on November 23, 2011, but it was that turnovers plagued SHU for the second game in a row. Finishing with 25, tied for its most in the last five seasons, the Pioneers have now turned the ball over at least 20 times in consecutive games for the first time since January 31 and February 2 of 2013. Those 25 turnovers led to a 31-10 advantage in points off turnovers for UMass Lowell.
Shooting 46.3 percent from the field, the River Hawks also had a 43-15 edge in bench points, led by 17 from White, who also had a game-high four steals. Thomas matched Broome's 20 points on 8-12 shooting and 4-5 from the line to lead UMass Lowell, and also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Ryan Jones and Keith Hayes chipped in with 12 and ten points, respectively.
Sacred Heart will look to end its current two-game losing streak on Saturday when it renews its cross-town rivalry with Fairfield. The 7 pm tip will be part of a doubleheader at Webster Bank Arena with the women, who tip at 5 pm.
