BRONX- Sophomore Trevor Guerrera ran to his first career All-East honor with a 12th place finish in a field of 183 competitors, as the Sacred Heart men's cross country team wrapped up its season at the IC4A Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park this past weekend. Running without Northeast Conference champion Sean Ferguson for the second consecutive race, SHU managed a 15th place team finish as all five scorers were sophomores.
"It's tough when you go without your top runner in a big race, but the men performed admirably," said Head Coach Christian Morrison. Trevor, especially, had the best race of his career thus far to earn All East honors. This is a very young team, and there's a lot we can build upon, from our 2nd place conference finish, to our first invitational win in several years. The future looks bright with this group."
Guerrera's five-mile time of 26:08.6 was a new personal Van Cortlandt Park course best by 55 seconds, and was the fifth fastest time at the course in program history. A year after placing 38th as a freshman, he was just 1.2 seconds out of the top ten and less than six seconds behind the sixth place finisher.
Also setting a new course best was fellow sophomore Tim Loehner, whose time of 27:14.5 was 15 seconds better than his previous best. Running in his first career race on the course, Andrew Handfield was the third Pioneer to cross clocking in at 27:23.0 for 72nd place. Bryan Reilly and Joseph Klein rounded out the Pioneer top five in 143rd and 149th place, respectively, with times of 29:14.6 and 29:31.2.
