Sacred Heart Topped by Stevenson, 6-2

Box Score

REISTERSTOWN, Md. – Alanna Woodford cut a 2-0 lead to one late in the first period, but the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team could not overcome six goals as they fell at Stevenson, 6-2, on Friday afternoon. Teagan Ketchum added the second SHU goal late in the loss that drops SHU to 7-14-1. Chelsea Blackburn led the Mustangs with a natural hat trick, scoring two in the second, including one shorthanded, and adding one more in the third. Stevenson, who went 3-10 on the power play, wins its third straight over the Pioneers this season to improve to 15-6.

After falling behind 2-0 early, Woodford provided Sacred Heart with momentum just 1:20 before the first intermission with her team-leading 14th goal of the season. Line mate and fellow assistant captain Casey Stathopoulos set up the score for her team leading 17th assist on the year.

Skating to a scoreless period for nearly ten minutes, Blackburn cushioned the Mustang lead to two once again with her first goal with 10:31 on the clock. She added her second and Stevenson's fourth, shorthanded, with just 3:12 showing on the second period clock. She completed the hat trick 4:47 into the final period.

After the Mustangs added another midway through the third, Ketchum put the Pioneers back on the board with 9:52 left in the game. Amie Varano tallied her second assist of the year on the goal.

Stevenson took advantage of 12 Sacred Heart penalties, which resulted in three power play scores, as well as scoring the shorthanded goal. The Pioneers could not convert on their three man advantage opportunities. SHU's Nicole Magee stopped 31 of 37 shots in the loss. Anastassia Nelson would only need to make 13 saves, as Stevenson held a, 37-15, edge in shots.

Both of the Mustangs' first period goals came on the power play. Erin McLoughlin opened the scoring 7:23 into the game. Megan Alexander added a second with 9:42 remaining in the first.

The two teams meet again tomorrow evening for the fourth and final time. The puck will drop at 5:15 pm.
