Sacred Heart Earns Tie at Stevenson, 2-2

REISTERSTOWN, Md. – The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team took a 2-1 lead early in the third period, but could not hang on the lead as they earned a, 2-2, tie at Stevenson University on Saturday evening. It was the first point for SHU against Stevenson in four tries this season, as the Pioneers are now 7-14-2 on the year. It was the first tie of he campaign for the Mustangs, who held a, 32-23, edge in shots, and now sit at 15-6-1.

With the game looking as if it were going into the third, 1-0 Stevenson, Casey Stathopoulos tied the game with just 31 seconds left on the second period clock. Assisting on the play was Alanna Woodford and Amie Varano. She then provided Sacred Heart with its lead juts 24 seconds out of the second intermission. The unassisted score was her second of the contest and increased her team lead in points to 27.

The Pioneers did all they could to hold onto the lead, but the Mustangs finally broke through with just 6:01 remaining. Monica Pozuc netted her second of the game on the power play to even the score. The two teams had three shots on net each in the final 6:01. Stathopoulos had the last effort of regulation with 15 second on the clock, but could not beat Sarah Modzelewski and the game went into overtime. 

Still tied in the final minute of overtime, this time it was Natasha Klinoff who was denied by Modzewlewski. Moments later, Stevenson had the lost shot of the game, with Amanda Fontaine denying it to secure the tie.

Both teams had three power play opportunities, with the Mustangs converting the only man advantage score. Fontaine turned away thirty shots in the tie, while Modzelewski saved 21.

Much of the first period was played in the neutral zone, as each team only had six attempts on net, resulting in a scoreless first. It was the Mustangs who opened the scoring at the 11:24 mark of the second period. Pozuc scored unassisted. 

Sacred Heart wraps up its regular season with the rescheduled game with Williams on Tuesday at 7 pm.
