Sorrento Homers as Sacred Heart Falls to Washington State, 14-2

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. – Victor Sorrento went 2-4 with a home run as the Sacred Heart baseball team was beaten by Washington State, 14-2, on Friday evening. For the second straight game, SHU got on the board first, but could not hold on, as they are now 0-6 to begin the season. WSU got six innings of two run ball from its starter, J. Pistorese, while ten different players recorded hits for the Cougars, who have won five of six to improve to 9-5.

After both teams went 1-2-3 in the first, it was Sorrento who opened the scoring with a two out home run down the left field line, the first of the year for Sacred Heart. Washington State came right back to tie it in the bottom of the frame as W. Leow doubled to lead off the inning, and scored after a passed ball and RBI groundout.

The Cougars then broke the game open in the third with five runs. Three straight singles set up a bases loaded situation for Leow, who delivered with a single of his own to drive in two. Following a walk to load the bases once more, B. Roberts added to the lead with a sacrifice fly to right field. After a stolen base put runners on second and third, T. McDowell produced the fifth single of the inning to cap the third inning scoring and push the lead to 6-1.

SHU threatened in the fourth with two straight two out singles by Keith Klebart and Sorrento, but the door was shut with a strike out. WSU added two more in the sixth, once again loading the bases with nobody out, this time without a hit as there were two hit batters and a walk. S. Matheny knocked in two with his single to left center.

The Pioneers' second run in the six was generated by Alex Perry's leadoff double. Zack Short advanced him to third with a fly out, and Jayson Sullivan scored Perry with a RBI groundout. Washington State added six more in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Robbie Maguire took the loss, allowing six runs over 2.1 innings of work. Dan Wertz pitched .2 innings of scoreless baseball, while Mike Lembo and John Sostarich both provided an inning of scoreless relief of their own

The two teams meet again tomorrow, as game three's first pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 6 pm EDT.
