Sacred Heart Shutout by Cornell

Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart field hockey team was shutout by Albany 7-0 on Friday night in a neutral game at Alumni Turf Field on the Campus of Albany. It is the third straight loss for the Pioneers, who drop to 1-3, while the Big Red picked their first win of the season to move to 1-2.

Cornell scored four goals in the first before adding three more in the second. Krysten Mayers and Katy Weeks both recorded two goals for the Big Red, who outshot the Pioneers 21-4. Kelly Johnson was forced to make one save in the shutout, while Mary Altepeter stopped eight shots in net for SHU.

The Pioneers will play their first ever home game at Yale's Johnson Field on Sunday, as they host Holy Cross for a 1 pm start.

First Half

Altepeter's first save of the night came just over minute of the game

SHU's best opportunity  of the half, and only shot on net, came at the 3:59 mark when Nichole Tolli found Danielle Gallagher in the box, whose cross found Lauren Lawson for an effort on net.

The next shot of the game produced the first goal with just under seven minutes on the clock. Weeks found a loose ball at the top of the circle and fired her shot past Altepter.

Just over three minutes later it was 2-0, as Mayers dribbled around a couple of SHU defenders in the circle and unleashed a shot from six yards out.

Cornell's next two goals were just 1:35 apart and both came from a corner. Sam McIlwrick deflected in a Marisa Siergiej shot from a corner for the first goal at the 13:43 mark. Siergiej then scored directly 1:35 later, as her shot deflected off of a defender but had enough to just cross the goal line.

Six of Altepter's eight saves came in the first half.

Second Half

There was not a shot by either side until Christine Mace sent a shot wide after a penalty corner seven and a half minutes out of the break.

Allie Brouhard prevented a goal with a defensive save 12:09 into the half.

Cornell struck with two goals in a short span once again, with Kate Fitzpatrick and Weeks finding the back of the net in the 55th and 56th minute. The seventh goal came in the 63rd and was Mayers second of the game.

Two of SHU's shots came with just under two minutes remaining in the contest. After a second consecutive corner, both Olivia Volpe and Oliva Lehane had their attempts blocked.

Sacred Heart had three penalty corners to Cornell's one in the frame.
