Box Score NEW HAVEN, CONN. (September 13, 2015)—Rachel Claroni notched a pair of goals leading the Sacred Heart field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Holy Cross Sunday in the 2015 home-opener. The senior's first two goals of the season snapped the Pioneers' three-game slide improving SHU to 2-3 on the season, while the Crusaders fell to 3-3.
The Pioneers hit the road for a four-game stretch beginning with Dartmouth on Sept. 18.
First Half
- The Pioneers outshot Holy Cross 8-7 in the first half
- Holy Cross had the ball in its offensive zone for the first six minutes, but the SHU defense stepped up blocking the first three Crusader shots
- SHU had plenty of opportunity in the 15th and 16th minutes of the game getting two shots on a pair of corners before Claroni scored the first goal of the game
- In the 18th minute, Christine Mace took a corner for the Pioneers finding Nichole Dobachesky at the top of the circle. The senior fed Claroni to her left, who found the back of the cage giving SHU the advantage
- Just over two minutes later, the Crusaders' Haley Makuch got one past Mary Altepeter getting the ball on a corner from Kaitlyn Murray
Second Half
- The team of Mace, Dobachesky and Claroni recreated their first-half goal to put the Pioneers ahead 2-1 in the game's 45
- SHU was outshot 9-2 in the second half with Altepeter racking up six saves in the half
